Trench dams are simple barriers placed at every so many feet of underground pipes around the pipes so as to stop water from flowing through the underground utility trench. So it prevents the formation of an underground river through the trench and protects the stability of soil at that location because the formation of underground river would cause sediments in the trench to flow and cause collapses at the ground surface along the trench.
