    Excavator

Make sure that your earthwork subcontractor has a reliable excavator before starting the job. Insist that he checks everything before hitting the ground. Do not forget that when he hits the ground, he definitely will be on the critical path of your schedule. This means, nobody else will be able to work but him, and everyone will be waiting for him. Therefore your whole schedule will depend on the reliability of his excavator. Many times minor malfunctions can be repaired on the site but even those will delay your schedule.

The type of equipment a company uses says a lot about the company. If you are in a situation where heavy equipment is being used, you want to make sure they have the capability. Excavators are a major component of moving a lot of dirt. Never be afraid to ask a contractor how they plan to tackle a project. If they can't give you specific information, it might be time to look for another.
